The Unforgettable Music Player & Digital Radio was designed with one simple aim; to make it as easy as possible, for as many people as possible, to keep enjoying their favourite music.
There’s lots of evidence of the benefits of music for those with memory loss and dementia. Regions of the brain associated with music often remain relatively intact, which could be why people with dementia can still vividly recall their favourite songs even when other memories are fading. Music can also lift the spirits and be a powerfully calming influence. We also know how much joy music can bring to everyone on the dementia journey, so how could we help them all to continue listening and to take control of what they listen to?
The obvious place to start was by talking to the people we wanted to help. So, we spoke to more than 300 people living with dementia and caregivers too. We held discussion groups and conducted detailed surveys to find out the positives and negatives around how they currently listen to music. We listened very carefully to all their feedback, then we used their insights and everything they told us to fine tune our design ideas.
The result is, in our opinion, a truly innovative product. Why? Because The Unforgettable Music Player & Digital Radio is designed to allow you and the person you care about to choose the level of control you want. For those who just need a little extra help, the large, coloured buttons are easy to operate. For those who find too many controls confusing and need things pared-down, all the buttons can be hidden apart from the on/off switch. And because music is such a personal experience for everyone, we’ve made it easy to create a personalised playlist, which will bring back happy memories for the person you love.
‘We’re very proud that the new music player translates the insights we gathered from our community into such a special, beautifully designed product,’ explains Adam Vaughan, Unforgettable’s Head of New Product and Innovation.
Other experts already seem to agree. This week, we were delighted to discover that the music player has been selected as a finalist for the National Dementia Care Awards, becoming one of only five products to be shortlisted in the category of Outstanding Dementia Care Product 2018.
Let’s hope it’s the first of many.
The winner will be announced in November.
